The HALANSM® 220189 is the 80A mild steel shield for the Hypertherm HPR plasma torch family — HPR130, HPR260, HPR130XD, HPR260XD, HPR400XD, HPR800XD, HD3070, HD4070 . High-conductivity copper alloy body, precision-machined to sit between the nozzle retaining cap (220756) and the shield cap (220747) . Its job: take the brunt of the sparks and spatter so that wear to other parts is minimized, while the integrated O-ring ensures leak-proof sealing of the shield gas . In the HPR 80A mild steel stack it pairs with 220187 electrode + 220179 swirl ring + 220188 nozzle + 220756 retaining cap + 220189 shield + 220747 shield cap + 220340 water tube . Shield 220189 / 80A Mild Steel Shield for HPR Series – HALANSM®
220189 is Hypertherm's 80A mild steel shield for the HPR plasma torch family. High-conductivity copper alloy body, precision-machined to sit in the mid-stack position between the nozzle retaining cap (220756) and the shield cap (220747) . Its primary function is protective: it takes the brunt of the sparks and spatter so that wear to other parts — especially the precision nozzle and electrode — is minimized . This sacrificial design is what makes the shield a consumable: it is engineered to absorb the damage that would otherwise destroy far more expensive components deeper in the torch.

80A MS shield, one part number crosses BOTH platforms: 220189 fits the older HPR130/HPR260 AND the newer HPR130XD/HPR260XD/HPR400XD/HPR800XD, plus HD3070/HD4070 robotic torches . The 80A mild steel shield is platform-agnostic at the 80A level.
NOT a shield cap: 220189 is the shield (mid-stack protective sleeve around the nozzle). The shield cap that screws on top is 220747 (30–130A) . Both are required for a complete 80A stack — do not confuse the two.
Sacrificial protection component: The whole purpose of the 220189 is to take the brunt of the sparks and spatter, minimizing wear to the inner nozzle and electrode . A worn shield will cause spatter to reach the nozzle, leading to premature nozzle failure and degraded cut quality.
80A-only: 220189 is rated 80A mild steel. Running it at 130A will cause premature shield blow-out. Correct shields by amp: 30A = 220194, 50A = 220555, 130A = 220183, 200A = 220761, 260A = 220764, 400A = 220636.
Change as a set: Per Hypertherm's guidance, HPR consumables interact synergistically — replace electrode + swirl + nozzle + retaining cap + shield + shield cap together for peak cut quality and life .
NOTE: 220189 = 80A MS shield. Fits HPR130/HPR260/HPR130XD/HPR260XD/HPR400XD/HPR800XD/HD3070/HD4070. Shield cap pairing: 30–130A → 220747. The 80A MS stack is identical across all HPR/HPRXD machines except for the water tube (220340). HALANSM 220189 is an aftermarket compatible replacement, not Hypertherm OEM.
